Q: do infants out grow the reflux and if so at what age?

I have a 16 week infant who is currently on Zantac for acid reflux,  she constantly fights the bottle, does not sleep well and seems to be in pain while eating.  We are going to the GI dr. next week and hope to get some answers.  She has poor weight gain and it can take 1 hour to feed 3oz of formula. it's been a nightmare for the past 3 months.

Hello Anna, So sorry you and your little one have been struggling with reflux for so long. I hope you get some answers from the doctor. Most babies outgrow the reflux in the first year or two. Keep in mind that most babies, regardless of the severity of the reflux get better little by little during the first year as the esophagus lengthens, the stomach adjusts to the liquid diet and the baby is more upright and eating solids. It is the goal of treatment to lessen the pain and discomfort. You might have other symptoms but the severity may decrease with treatment. There is no one treatment, medication or diet that helps all babies with reflux so you will need to work with the pediatrician and the pediatric gastroenterologist to figure out the best plan for your daughter.

Let me know if you have other questions and concerns and please keep us up to date on the appts and how you are both doing.
