Q: Major Acid Reflux Attacks...Please Help...

I have been suffering from Acid Reflux and GERD every since having my Gall Bladder removed in 2004.  The doctors have tried every medicene from Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix to Carafate and other proton pump inhibitors.  My attacks are usually present in the overnight, and last for days.  Typical Acid Reflux story, I have had all of the tests done and have no esophagus damage.  I am looking for advice on how to combat the attack when it is a full blown attack.  I have tried milk, bananas, apples, vinegar, baking soda in water, zantac and other antacids, all to no avail.  I do not drink caffine and strictly drink water.  My diet is bland with no spices.  I have cut out all of the trigger factors.  The repeated trips to the specialists with no answers is frustrating, but I know many are affected by this similar scenario and possibly you can shed some insight for me.Thanks.....

Hello Mike,

I know much more about kids with GERD than adults with GERD but I will try to help you. I wonder if the doctor has considered doing a test called a pH Probe. There is a new, more sophisticated version out now called multi channel impedence. The probe can assess the acid levels in your esophagus and stomach for 24 hours, giving a sample of a typical day and night. If there is significant acid despite medication and a careful diet, not to mention the pain and poor sleep, you might be a candidate for surgery. If there is not significant acid, perhaps the doctors need to look for another cause for your symptoms.
