Q: Too much Nexium?

I have bad GERD, and take 40mg of Nexium a day to keep it under control. I had been taking Ultram for a ruined knee (OA) and started to vomit every day. After tapering off the Ultram, it stopped. I think Ultram has caused more "sphincter"(sp?) problems. The Nexium is not working as well. When recently put on antibiotics, my GERD really got worse, and I got esophageal spasms (very painful). I'm going in for surgery tomorrow to have my parotid (salivary) gland removed (has a tumor on it). I know the doctor wants to give me Vicodin for pain. I sure don't want to vomit from pain medicine after having surgery on my neck!

Would it be harmful or helpful to take a larger dose of Nexium (maybe 60mg instead of 40mg) for awhile to try to calm my GERD down? I don't have insurance and this surgery is going to be very painful financially. Having surgery for my GERD is just not an option right now. I would really appreciate any replies. Thank you.

If the doctor gives you Vicodin for your pain, that should not affect your GERD. Ultram and NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and diclofenac, are more likely to cause you problems. Vicodin does not contain any NSAIDs and should be a better option than the Ultram.

However, if the Vicodin does cause the GERD to worsen, you can speak to your doctor about taking a higher dose of Nexium. Nexium is available in 20 and 40 mg strengths. I've seen several patients who take 40 mg twice a day to get their symptoms under control - just make sure you clear this with your doctor before you start taking a higher dose.

My Gerd has been really bad the last few days...I take 20mg. Nexium every morning....this evening I meant to take another 20mg. Nexium, but, took one of the 40mg. Nexium I have instead. Will this cause me problems.?
