Q: Weight gain and aciphex

I have been taking aciphex over a year and my doctor has had to double the dosage due to the coughing. I have gained over 18 lbs.  I read that some acid reflux meds can cause weight gain over time.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I went off the medicine and lost 3 lbs in as many days.  Water weight I know, but I don't feel bloated and swollen all the time any longer.  However, the acid reflux systoms are horrible.  I don't want to go back on the medicine.  Does anyone have a natural alternative that has worked for them?

Thanks for your question. While there are plenty of anecdotes from people with stories similar to yours (gaining weight while taking Aciphex), weight gain is not listed as a common side effect in the drug information. You should visit your doctor about this or any other side effects you may experience when taking medicine to make sure it is not serious.

In regards to naturally combatting acid reflux symptoms, there are plenty of diet and lifestyle changes people can make, from changing the foods they eat to their activities. You may find this list of acid reflux treatments helpful.

I just read that Zantac or Tagamet wouldn't cause weight gain.  I gained over 30 lbs on Nexium and its a PPI just like Aciphex.

I TOO HAVE GAINED ABOUT 20 POUNDS WHEN I SWITCHED TO NEXIUM FROM ACIPHEX WHICH I TOOK FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS WITH NO PROBLEM. MY INSURANCE QUIT COVERING ACIPHEX SO I HAD TO GO TO NEXIUM. I THINK I'LL PAY THE HIGHER PRICE AND GO BACK TO ACIPHEX.
