Tuesday, August 12, 2008 Liba asks

Q: Now that my reflux baby is starting solids, what foods should be avoided?

My 5 1/2 month old daughter was  diagnosed with acid reflux at 3 months, and has been taking zantac with marked  improvement.  Lately, she has been enjoying cereals, and fruit juices, and I do want to add more foods to her diet.  What food should I avoid so as not to upser her stomach?

Dear Liba, If the doctor hasn't restricted her diet, you should be able to add a variety of foods. Just watch her reaction to see if anything is bothering her stomach (turns away, burps, gas, rash). Some doctors recommend going slowly with new foods and check for reactions. If you are concerned about acid, try to stay away from peaches, apples and apricots. Most veggies are ok. If you are worried about food allergies, try sweet potatoes, white potatoes, carrots and pears.

Happy Eating! It is so nice that you have weathered the early issues with reflux and your little one is feeling well enough to eat solids. I know you are giving others hope that their babies will get better in a few months!
