Q: How do you know if perscribed medicine is working??

My son is 9 wks. old, he has been on "Axid" for 6 wks. His Dr. just switched dose from 1ml. to 1.8ml 2x's a day. My son never had projectile vomiting, or vomiting at all. He would "spit-up" a little bit, I didn't think it was unusual for him to do this. He had a stuffy nose @ 2 Wks. when I took him for his first check-up, he would also "snort" or grunt a little, I assume he had a cold, I did when I left the hospital with him. My Dr. stated it was Acid Reflux and perscribed "Axid." I'm not sure if it is working, I'm not sure thats what he has. The Dr. also said he was "Colicky." This is my third child and I have never dealt with anything like this before. He eats every 3hrs. about 3-4oz each time. He does seem like his tummy hurts after eating, only between 6:oo-10:30 at night, isn't that more like colic??

Hello!

You are asking an excellent question. With three kids, you are probably in the doctor's office every week...on one of those appointments,  I would ask the doctor to re visit the medication. Maybe the doctor is seeing something that wasn't fully explained at the appointment that indicated a need for medication. Some babies have silent reflux-the acid and food go up and down the food pipe (esophagus) rather than getting expelled as vomit. With a stethescope, a doctor might hear some of this rumbling. A doctor might try a trial off medicine to see if there is a change in the symptoms. Be sure to get permission from the doctor before changing the medicine.

Good luck-after my refluxer was born, I had three children under the age of 5 years. It takes quite a bit of patience and energy!
