Dear Concerned Grandparent,

A healthy, full term baby (without reflux) should start to go for longer stretches of sleep at night or even sleep all night long without waking to feed. The first thing to check is to make sure your grand baby is drinking enough during the day so that he can sleep all night and grow properly. The doctor or nurse should give you some information on how much he needs per day based on his age and weight.

If he is waking up at night, it could be from reflux or something else. Again, the doctor needs to make sure he is healthy. Babies cry to communicate so we need to find out what he is trying to tell us!

I have not heard of crying causing reflux but long periods of crying can make reflux worse. When a baby cries, he can swallow a lot of air and this can make him feel full and uncomfortable. He may have more saliva or spit and this can irritate his stomach. I wonder if there is another caretaker in the house to help his mother attend to his needs at night.

Good luck,

Jan Gambino
