Sunday, December 11, 2011 Speakeasy asks

Q: Insurance forced a switch from Prozac to a generic Fluoxetine, even after a letter from my dr. Fluoxetine cases major heartburn for me within 5-10 minutes after taking it. Very painful.

My dr. and I believe it is the filler used in the generic as I did not have this problem with brand name Prozac. I put off taking this med, sometimes skipping it completely, because I can't force myself to be that miserable. It seems to work just as well for my depression but what good is that if I simply can't take it? I see my Dr. (psychiatrist) 2 times a year and I have told him about this. Unfortunately, I can't afford brand name, my insurance won't cover it, and Fluoxetine is the closest substitute. Prior to Prozac, we spent years trying various medications with no success treating the depression. Even after we went to Prozac it took a few years to get the dosages at the proper level. I take 80mg/daily. I don't know what question to ask; I just know that I can't take Fluoxetine much longer and have considered just going back to depression. Not something I want to do.

I'm really sorry you are dealing with this. It does make sense that you are having a reaction to one of the filler medications. It doesn't make sense that your insurance company deny the extenuating circumstance as one of the alternatives would be for you to add a prescription reflux medication which would cause them additional cost.

I have a couple of thoughts:

1)Try a different pharmacy - different pharmacies have different manufacturers of the generics and you might find another company making the generic that works for you. You might want to start with the company you already got it from and ask them for the manufacturer info then you could make some calls and see if there is another alternative.

2) Contact your insurance company directly and ask for a patient care representative. Explain the situation stressing that there will be increased cost to them due to the need for a reflux medication.

3) Contact the maker of Prozac to see if they can help you out with your insurance or with discounts.

I hope some combo of this works!
