Q: What can i do for trouble sleeping and trouble eating with my acid reflux? Will the meds always work

I found out today that i had acid reflux and i was put on some basic medication for it. I had it for five days without medicine and i thought i was frekain dying or having a heart attack or stroke or something. I get a horrible burning and pressure in my chest and i can barely eat. I get really dizzy and nauseated and feel like i'm going to pass out. Will the medicine clear it up and make it better so i don't go through that pain again?

I'm glad you got some answers! The medicine is often used as part of the diagnostic process. If it helps then you have reflux. But, it can take a while to find the right medication for you. The newest recommendation coming out is for patients to start on H2 blockers and progress to PPIs if needed (see link to more info about meds below). For many H2 blockers are enough to do the trick. But, if you find that your symptoms are not under control then it's time to head back to the doctor. If you take your medicine as prescribed for a good two weeks and don't have significant relief then you definitely need to go back to your doc for more work up.

Best of Luck - Stephanie
