Hello Vanessa,

So sorry to hear your little one is having reflux symptoms. Early on, it takes a bit of trial and error for you and the doctor to figure out the best approach. Diet, positioning and medication are the key treatments.

Diet: Some babies have Milk Soy Protein Intolerance and need a dairy and soy free formula. If your baby has reflux and MSPI, a special formula may be needed. Reflux can make the tummy very sensitive so a special formula for babies with digestive problems may help.Thickening the formula may decrease vomiting. Again, ask the doctor about how much thickener and what type to use. Often rice cereal is used but there are other ways to thicken as well.

Positioning: Try to keep him upright after a feeding and consider using a wedge/harness system for sleep and upright play.

Medication: Medication may help to reduce acid. The medication may not reduce the vomiting but at least the vomit will not be acidic and irritating. Many doctors are using medication very carefully-for just a few weeks. If the medication is not helping significantly, some doctors will stop the medication and use the other treatments listed above.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Best wishes,

Jan Gambino
