Q: Hi, My Daughter has Acid Reflux. Is it possible that it can cause vomiting?

She takes Zantac 150 2x a day. She said her acid reflux was bad yesterday and then this morning she started vomiting bile. Not sure if it's a Bug or the Reflux causing it.

Hello Sue B,

As you know, babies with reflux are very good at vomiting as this is a common symptom. It is less common for children, teens and adults to vomit due to reflux. Often dietary changes such as eating smaller meals and medication reduce or eliminate vomiting in older children/adults.

So to answer your question-vomiting can be a symptom of acid reflux. On the other hand, if this is a new symptom that your daughter has never had before, it could be a stomach bug. Certainly keep an eye on her and consult the doctor if she is having worrisome symptoms.

Some parents tell me their kids with GERD get the stomach bug first, it lasts longer and causes more symptoms than their other kids without GERD.

Hope this is just a passing bug. Let me know either way-ok?

Jan
