Q: Treatments for Poor Voice Quality from Acid Reflux

I have had acid reflex problems for a few years. I am 40 years old. Male. Very good health besides this. I am going to a gastro specialist this week as I haven't felt like I have made that much progress. My main concern is my throat. I am looking for what foods or is there anything I can do to try to improve my voice?

Hello Ken,

Your question is well timed! I am attending the American Academy of Pediatrics meeting this weekend and heard a pediatric laryngologist speak on voice problems. While there are different causes of voice problems, reflux can have a role in causing a hoarse voice.

You may want to ask the GI doctor about getting a referral to a Ears, Nose and Throat doctor (otolaryngologist) or a Laryngologist. In addition, some hospitals and clinics offer voice clinics so you can get a voice evaluation from a speech language pathologist.

Good luck with this frustrating problem.
