Thanks for your question. I wouldn't want to recommend any OTC medications to you, especially without being a doctor. However, there are several dietary and lifestyle changes one can make to help combat GERD symptoms. I hope this helps.

I WAS ON PREVICID FOR AWHILE AND IT WAS $132 EVEN WITH THE INSURANCE. I TRIED PRILOSECOTC AND HAVE TAKEN IT FOR YEARS NOW. I TAKE ONE WITH DINNER AT NIGHT AND I CAN NOW DRINK COFFEE(WHICH I LOVE) EAT CINNAMON ROLLS AND PIZZA WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM. BEFORE I COULDN'T EAT CEREAL IN THE MORNING WITHOUT HEARTBURN. I LOVE IT! WHEN THERE WAS A SHORTAGE A WHILE BACK I ABOUT CAME UNGLUED LOOKING ALL OVER THE STORES FOR A BOX OF PRILOSEC. NONE OF THE OTHER ACID RELIEVERS WORK LIKE THIS.

I would check with your insurance company to find out what medication instead of Prevacid they will cover.  Protonix and Nexium are both excellent medications.  Your Gastroenterologist and/or Pharmacist should be able to assist you in identifying alternatives that would be covered by your insurance.

I would strongly suggest you not take Prilosec OTC for an extended period of time.  If your doctor prescribed the Prevacid for GERD, it is very important you keep it under control before it develops into other problems for you.

I have also found avoiding chocolate, coffee and alcohol have helped my reflux disease.

Hope this was helpful and hope you are able to find a medication that works for you as well as is covered by your insurance.
