Does use of antacids cause weight gain
I have heard that there are several prescription antacids that cause weight gain but there are several over-the-counter antacids that do not. What are some of the antacids that do not cause weight gain?
Hi Pammela,
Thank you for your question! There are several types of medication used to treat acid reflux. Medications belonging to the class known as PPIs (including Nexium, Aciphex, Prevacid, Protonix) have been linked to weight changes, though that side effect is reported as occurring in less than 1% of patients. The medication class known as H2 blockers (including Zantac, Tagamet, Pepcid, and Axid) are not assicated with weight change. However, several of the H2 blockers (Zantac and Tagamet) interact with a lot of other medications, so I would recommend checking with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new medications.
Best of luck!

I gain weight with all of them. I started pepcid a few days ago and shot up 4 lbs. I am stopping it. None of them work anyway. I gained on zantac too.
