Wednesday, April 30, 2008 Vic Palma asks

Q: When I get a heartburn attack is there something I can do to alleviate the symptons ?

I am on Nexium, and for natural type remedies I eat Papaya, drink chamomile tea w/ honey, etc. I have been feeling somewhat better, but occasionally still get an attack of heart burn. It seems to last at least 24 hours before it subsides. Is there any other ideas or remedies to counteract the heartburn when I do get it. I'm trying to recognize what I may have eaten to bring it on each time it happens to minimize the attacks, but I'm not always successful.

Thank you,

Vic Palma

Hello Vic Palma!

You've found the wonderful benefits of Papaya, but did you also realize that pineapple grown in the United States is a low acidic hybrid that has enzymes that help the digestion process which helps prevent acid reflux? Also boiling chicory root and letting it cool, drinking it as a tea also has soothing benefits. You can read about these factoids in Dr Eisner's posting about them.

Jan Gambino, a resident expert here also talks about a book that has lots of natural remedy tips. You can read that article here, and about Jan Gambino here.

There is a user named ladyisis that has had issues and has found some help. You can read her postings here.

hello,

create a food diary.  this will give you an idea of what foods triggers your symptoms. try not to lay flat on your back or tummy.

this will allow stomach acid to travel through your esophagus.  drink more water during the day.  chewing gum helps to create saliva which helps minimizes stomach acid.

it's usually said eat three to four hrs. before going to bed.  but for some [like myself] that may not work.  so try to eat five or maybe six hrs. before going to bed.

as good as nexium is you can also experience quite a few side effects.  talk with your dr. about taking prilosec which is just as good as nexium, but without all of those side effects.

try to lose 10lbs.  being overweight even just a tad, can relax your lower esophageal sphincter.  this valve is what is supposed to keep stomach acid in the stomach.  when it's relaxed, the acid will travel through your esophagus and heartburn will occur.

i hope this helps.
