Tuesday, July 14, 2009 Donna T asks

Q: Should I be changing the dose of Prevacid for my 10 week old? GERD symptoms returned (vomiting).

My 10 week old has been diagnosed with GERD and a milk allergy. He has been on Prevacid and Neocate formula for about 1 month now, and was doing better. Although, the vomiting has started again and he still has wheezing, congestion and is very gassy. Should we be increasing the dosage, he is on 6mg daily. Please advise. Thank you, Donna T

Hello Donna, It is best to ask the doctor for advice. Certainly with the Milk Soy Protein Intolerance, diet is very important. Sometimes the Prevacid, depending on the formulation can have a trace of dairy in it. Check with the pharmacist to be sure. With persistent wheezing and congestion, it might make sense to get a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist or a pediatric pulmonologist.

It does seem that the treatment plan may need to be adjusted a bit. This is very common with infant reflux. It can be very frustrating to parents and doctors. The good news is, once the treatment plan has been fine tuned, you will have the upper hand.

Let us know how he is coming along.
