Baby having side effects from prevacid has anyone experienced this.

Donna T

My 5 month old has been diagnosed with GERD and milk allergy and has been on prevacid for 3 months now (10mg 2x), and I believe that he gets headaches from this. He is always grabbing at his head during the day.  Not a normal behavior in a child.  Has anyones child had this side effect from the medicine? Now his doctor wants him to take the full dose at night time.  I wanted to change the medicine to Prolisec and the doctor told me absolutely NOT.  I've read that this medicine has been approved by the FDA.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Donna, Headache is a documented side effect of the PPI's. Certainly it is difficult to determine if a child has a headache, much less an infant. You might want to download the drug information and bring it to the doctor. At the same time, I would document how often your son is grabbing his head. If you and the doctor decide to increase the dose of medication for a short term trial (1-2 weeks), you will be able to compare his symptoms before and after.

It is also important to work with the doctor on other treatments. Food allergies can cause discomfort too. There is a lot of guesswork with treating babies-your observations are very important to the doctor.

Some of the medications have dairy as an ingredient. Is he on a special milk free diet too?

Let me know.

Thanks for the response.  Yes, he is on a milk free diet and is currently on Elecare.  I will give him the dose at night and see if it makes a difference. I just can't wait for this reflux to go away, UGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Hello Donna,

I hear your big sigh...It will get better but it feels like forever when you are in the middle of it all. I found that it is important to take friends along for the ride...there is lots of support and information here at HealthCentral.

So try the night dose for a week or two and report back to the doctor. You are the expert here-you know your little guy the best. If he is having discomfort, you are his voice and his advocate with the doctor.

Please keep in touch!
