Q: Are acid reflux disease and stomach ulcers related in any way?

I have recently, within the passed few months, been experiencing heartburn. I thought this was just something that happens to everyone, but then it started going further up my esophagus causing a sore throat. I thought it had to do with my allergies, but it's mostly in my chest and making my throat raw. It's hard to swallow even water. I also thought that the stomach burn, right under my diaphragm was part of the heartburn, but have come to find out that it is most likely a minor stomach ulcer. I was just wondering if stomach ulcers and acid reflux were somehow related? That way I can make some sort of change and, more or less, hit two birds with one stone. I'm new to this, so any information is helpful. Thanks!

Yes, they can both be related. We all reflux but when it is too often or the acidity is too high the acid into the esophagus causes painful symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, etc. If the stomach is unable to deal with the acidity you can end up with an ulcer. But, there are other reasons for ulcers such as H.Pylori infection which can be treated with anti-biotics.

So, while they are likely related getting adequate testing and medication through a trained professional is the only way to know if in your case they are related to the same thing or if the ulcer is causing the reflux or if they are due to different causes.
