Q: CAN INFANTS HAVE PROBIOTICS TO TREAT ACID REFLUX

MY BABY IS 4 WEEKS OLD. OUR PEDIATRICIAN IS LEANING TOWARDS DIAGNOSING MY DAUGHTER WITH ACID REFLUX. I AM LOOKING TO TREAT HER IN A NATURAL APPROACH OPPOSED TO MEDICATIONS. IS PROBIOTICS SAFE FOR INFANTS? I TAKE IT EVERYDAY MYSELF.... I KNOW THERE IS A LIQUID FORM AND I HAVE HEARD THAT INFANTS CAN HAVE IT IN SMALL DOSES. IS THAT TRUE?

Hello! Research has shown that probiotics benefit babies with eczema. I have seen other studies showing a decrease in crying and "colic" (whatever that is...) symptoms. Some formula manufacturers are adding probiotics to their formula.

It is certainly worth discussing with the doctor.

There are several proven non medication approaches to treating reflux you and the doctor might want to consider:

1. thickening feedings

2. holding up right after a feeding, sleeping on an elevated surface (wedge)

3. eating small, more frequent meals

4. avoid over feeding

Hope this helps!

logicaly there is no role of probiotics in acid reflux.acid reflux is aproblem associated with cardiac sphincter.( due to smoothnes of its muscles)so it need not to treat by probiotics but by the age it solves by natural.for prophylactic antacids with antiflatulent combinations can b given, herble medicines r availabl in d market.
