The problem is that you need to weigh the benefits vs. the side effects or potential harm. Fatigue and muscle weakness are listed as possible side effects. They may not be common but they do happen in some people.

It would make sense to go back to your doctor with the new results. He may want to run some blood tests if he hasn't already to check for your B12 level and other blood levels. He may want to try another one of the PPIs.

But, you also will want to report on how your reflux symptoms are. It may become a game of trying to find the best balance between the reflux symptoms and the right medication. There are still a lot of other PPIs that may be options for you.

Long term - At one point the thought was that they were okay for long term use. But, the medication is listed as a short term medication but is used off label for much longer time periods. There is now evidence that long term use can lead to bone loss and possibly problems with higher levels of reflux after you stop than when you started. But, again it's all about balance. Untreated reflux can lead to ulcers and/or Barrett's esophagus both of which can be life threatening.

Your doctor should be able to help you navigate this. You can help by keeping track of your symptoms as you change medications.
