Q: What can be done to alleviate esophageal spasms which cause chest pain when they occur?

I have taken PPIs for years for GERD and they seem to neutralize and manage most of my GERD symptoms.  However, the PPIs don't prevent esophageal spasms or alleviate them when they occur.  I'd appreciate any advice (medicines, alternative medicines, diet, etc.) to stop the spasms as quckly as possible when they occur.  The spasms usually last at least a week or longer and can be very painful and disconcerting.

Thanks.

Hi Bob,

Jan Gambino recommends a book called Positive Options for Hiatus Hernia: Self Help and Treatment here in her article about the top 10 books for GERD information. Another user on healthcentral named Pensivepete, had this to say about his experience with esophageal spasms. In another posting, a user named Karla has the fundoplication surgery and told of her experiences with spasms. You can read that posting here.

I hope this gives you some alternatives to look at. Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
