Q: is bloating after a meal related to GERD?

My husband suffers with GERD and has been diagnosed to have some esophageal erosion. He takes nexium twice a day and is watched by our gastroenterologist, every six months.

In recent months, after eating a moderate amount of food, he suffers from bloating and fatigue. Antacids, maalox, etc., do not help him feel better. He has a moderate amount of burping and flatulence, only on occasion. I have never seen these symptoms related to GERD. Any advice?

Hello Gigi,

Thank you for your question. You are right, bloating and fatigue are not generally considered a symptom of reflux. Reflux is often associated with symptoms in the upper gi tract: heartburn, sore throat, difficulty swallowing. However, sometimes the whole digestive system seems to get involved.

Gas and bloating can be caused by extra air in the stomach from eating, eating too fast, eating a large meal or food intolerances/allergies. Certainly a high fat food or fried food will digest more slowly than carbohydrates so adjusting the meal and meal size may help a bit. My kids have had varying issues with lactose intolerance but gas bloat and gas are common. Again, something to check out with the doctor.

Fatigue with gas bloat needs to be checked out by the doctor.

Maybe someone else has had experience with this combination of symptoms.

Jan
