Hi Sandra,

Darkish red or brown blood is normal in some instances. Menstruation is when the uterus sloughs off the old dead lining each month to make room for the new. Kind of like the skin sloughs off old cells for new. You can read about conditions associated with the menstrual cycle here.

If your daughter is experiencing any pain or discomfort, or you are concerned, you should get her to a gynecologist for a check up. All young women should see a doctor once a year, more often if warranted. While online sites are great for getting the information you need to ask all the right questions, it should not take the place of your doctor's expert care and advice.

Take care and stay in touch. Let us know how you and your daughter are doing.
