Q: Wondering if prevacid can cause allergy type symptoms or if my child has seasonal allergies.

Hi, my 3 year old has been on Prevacid for a little over a month, has helped..but has had a throat infection (about 1 montha go with a fever~ negative for strep)and continues to have  what appears to be allergy type symptoms:ie; red irritated throat, swollen tonsils, cough from this, stuffy sinuses and slight runny nose. Can this be a reaction to the prevacid or seasonal allergies..Claritin is not working nor is a nasal spray.

Tracina,

You are asking an interesting question. It is possible for just about any medication to cause an allergic reaction if the individual is allergic to an ingredient in the medication. I have not heard specifically about this type of reaction from Prevacid but it is possible. Is it possible that the start of the medication was also the beginning of an emerging environmental allergy such as pollen or mold?

A few years ago, my daughter had an unusual reaction to a medication and the doctor said that it could not possibly be related to the medication. I finally told the doctor that I wanted her off the medication. When I took her off the medication, the side effects went away within 24 hours!

Be sure to talk to the doctor about your concern and discuss the best way to proceed.

Thanks Jan,

It seems like we were at the doctors like once a week, i have 3 boys...:)  He actually refused to take it anymore anyways, but we had startd him on claritin around the time this started again, and he seems to be doing better, but not completely.  He was initially started on Zantac and it worked for a little while but then stopped.  He was switched to the dissolvable tabs...which he grew to hate.  so we stopped tehm and continued the claritin, and he is a little better.  I may be calling an allergist next.  Thanks for your help

<In my daughter, the symptoms you are describing were part of her reflux symptoms with the exception of fever. She had a red irritated throat, swollen tonsils, cough, and a runny/stuffy nose until we found the right meds and dosage for her.

When you talk to your child's doc you may want to ask about whether the symptoms could be related to the reflux.

Thanks, Actually we put him on zantac first b/c he had the irritated throat and clearing of the throat, after 10 days on it he stopped the throat thing, but eventually it stopped working. Our pediatrcian started him on the prevacid and i think it was working but then he started witht he throat clearing again, but a little different. i took him off the prevacid, and he's been on claritin for a while...and he occasionally has the throat clearing/ irritation, He wont take the prevacid dissolvable tabs anymore.  Not sure now if it is a seasonal allergy or allergy to othr stuff?? So i am going to wait a little bit and see how he does.  Thanks for the info though.
