Dear Darlene, I am sorry to hear that your grand baby is having some reflux symptoms. The Upper GI test is done in the radiology department. The doctor will tell you how long your grandson should fast before the test. He will drink the special solution mixed with his favorite beverage such as baby formula or breast milk just before the test. Most babies are hungry from fasting and don't seem too resistant to drinking the solution. A few babies may protest.  During the test, a baby may be placed in a special seat or papoose and strapped into place. This may be upsetting. Then a series of x rays are taken. A family member is allowed to stay with the baby. Some babies are upset about the test and the restraints. The good news is that the test is over in a matter of minutes. Some babies vomit after the test so bring extra clothes for you and the baby. Make sure he drinks plenty of water after the test because the chalky solution may cause constipation.
