Q: My mother has been diagnosed with having acid reflux!

I am worried about my mother, who has been diagnosed with acid reflux.  There are times when the acid reflux is so bad that she can't eat.  If she does eat, then she will throw up, or the food feels trapped in her throat causing extreme discomfort.  I am really getting worried because her symptoms actually sound more severe than acid reflux.  What do you think?

Reflux symptoms can be very severe at times. The feeling like food is trapped can be due to esophageal spasms or can be due to swelling secondary to the reflux itself. Did the doctor prescribe or recommend any medication? Was any testing done?

Often times, the doctors use medication as part of the diagnostic process. If they give you medication and you take it and feel better then that confirms that they were right. If you get better but not fully better then you might need more or different medication. It can take a full two weeks to get the full benefit of the medication though. The reason for this is that while the medicines will immediately start decreasing the acidity, if your Mom has inflammation it can take a while for that to heal.

Best of luck - Stephanie

Greetings!

Your mother is showing the same symptoms my father-in-law experienced (gastroesophageal reflux disease - GERD) when he and I were having breakfast at the Moose Lodge.  Unlike my father-in-law, who refused to see his doctor, I'd recommend your mother see her doctor asap. Here's an article on GERD that should help you better understand this issue of acid reflux your mother is experiencing. You can read the full article at this link GERD .
