Q: What do I do now? Prilosec helps me more than I can ever tell you, because of the price I had to

like crazy (because I am on medicare and medicaid) to get covered, up to and including having my state rep. help me, now I am supposed to take 2 pills per day and they told the pharmacy they refuse to cover it. I had to go through OTC, Nexum, Aciphex, Prevacaid and a couple others but I went through every side effect known (and some new ones) including losing my hair on the crown and sides; since I am a female you can just imagine.  There is something different in Prilosec that is not in others, they may have the same active ingredient but in the making of the different pills or brands, something is definitely different.  Believe me, they tested me every way possible with every substitution possible, and it just is the way my body reacts.  I have many other medical problems besides the gerds and acid reflux and the messed up esophagusand duodenum, my liver is bad, I have pancreatitis, billious gastritious, Chrons, and ulcerated colitis. Prilosec is the only thing that helps and that I don't have side effects with. My condition has gotten worse and they found that taking one in the a.m. and one at bedtime gives me even more relief as it was getting to the point that everything I ate or drank seemed to sit in the middle of my chest.  So I wasn't eating and and my anemia got worse and my hemoglobin dropped to 8.2 so here come the transfusions.  They couldn't find a reason so the doctor who is fabulous and has kept me alive longer than anyone ever expected suggested trying the two 40mg per day instead of one.  So... I am back to my original question, what do I do now? The price is so prohibitive I can't afford to buy the extra 30 pills per month out of pocket as I live on social security disability.  So tell me what do I do now. I know it seems to me that it would be more practical to give me the pills rather than pay for all the doctor visits, hospital tests and so on and so forth, but then the people at insurance companies are not doctors or qualified in any way except to follow their guideline.  So help me, what do I do now.

Sincerely,

Charlene Martin

Hi Charlene,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, I cannot find any information about a patient assistance program on Prilosec's website. However, at another website I did find the following contact information:

Patient Assistance Program
AstraZeneca Foundation
P.O. Box 15197
Wilmington, DE 19850-5197

800 424-3727

You can try contacting the company to see if there's any type of program that you can apply for. Manufacturing companies often have patient assistance programs to help people who can't afford their medications. I couldn't find much information about the Prilosec program, but it's worth a try. I hope this helps!

Best of luck to you,

Casey
