Monday, January 02, 2012 EP1 asks

Q: I have rented a house for a year, and lately I have been getting soreness in my chest, labored breathing, and oddly, I have to burp a lot.

These symptoms seem to be triggered when I am in the house.  Also, when I try to sleep, I find myself gasping involuntarily. The house is heated by gas, and I had similar problems when I lived in an apartment that was heated by gas a few years ago, but my current symptoms did not start until around Thanksgiving.  I have been seeing an allergist, and I know that I have a mold allergy. (I was just given an inhaler called Dulera, which I was told to use for two weeks.) But I have begun to suspect that it might have something to do with the furnace. Is this a possibility? Any other ideas?

It is possible that you are allergic to something in the duct work or that the dryness of the air is affecting you. You may want to consider a humidifier to see if that helps things. The labored breathing could cause gassiness as we often tend to gulp air when we are having troubles breathing. It's also possible that you could have reflux flares when you are having troubles breathing or that an allergic reaction causes reflux symptoms.
