Q: Excessive mucus with gerd?

I was diagnosed with Gastritis 10 years ago.  From time to time I will get Gastritis attacks, where the top part of my stomach hurts and feels like I'm extremely full, even without eating.

Lately, the past year or so, I've had excessive mucus/phlegm in my throat that 'seems' to be from post nasal drip; but I'm starting to wonder if it's GERD.  I get wheezing symptoms that accompany this mucus sometimes.  I've got appointments set up to rule out asthma (I think from the constant mucus present in my throat, I get infections more often).  Anyone experience anything like this?  I'm scared to death!!

These symptoms can definitely be due to GERD. The acid can irritate the throat and the windpipe causing mucous and also possibly asthma like symptoms. You can read more about the less commonly known symptoms of reflux here:

Also, I wrote a sharepost about chronic coughing and throat clearing due to reflux. You can read that here:

I'm glad to hear you are planning a trip to get this all checked out. I'm also glad you are arming yourself with knowledge about reflux in addition to the asthma stuff. Make sure the doc knows your gastritis history as well as the new symptoms.

Best of Luck - Stephanie

Oh my God! This has been happening to me since the middle of March, and I have tried every home remedy I can read upon. You are the only other person I have heard who admits to having these symptoms. I asked all of my family and friends and they all say maybe it's bronchitis. "Stop smoking" Well, I don't smoke, but my husband does. I have been afraid to eat thinking it may get worse. I didn't eat yesterday, and I have that full feeling at the top of my stomach and it is hurting. I didn't sleep last night from coughing so much/excessive mucus and phlegm. First clumps of gold colored mucus, now sometime yellow, sometimes sticky white. I tried to make an appointment at Kaiser, but my doctor is booked up for at least a month. I may just go on into emergency if this keeps up.
