Q: Does the medication for acid reflux cause a risk for repetitive illness?

I get very ill from time to time. I have barretts and I take aciphex twice a day. Sometimes when I'm sleeping I choke and other times it makes me so sick that I can't get out of bed. After one day I'm OK but I'm getting older and I'm concerned how long I can deal with this. When I get sick I'm delirious and I can't get out of bed to go to the doctor.

I'm concerned that with Barrett's you don't have complete relief. It sounds like these episodes are particularly bad too. If you haven't already it's definitely time to go back and see your doctor. He may want to do a repeat Endoscopy.

The medicine itself may not put you at risk for these episodes but many of us have spikes in our reflux despite our meds. The problem in your case is that you know you have Barrett's and you know you are still having severe symptoms.

Best of Luck - Stephanie
