Q: I am wakened in early morning hours with burning acidic taste in throat, mouth tongue and lips

I've been teated for acid rellux for many years, I am 75 yrs old. I have been taking nexium for a numre of years sometimes twice a day when sypmtoms are bad. I often waken in te early morning hours with a horrible taste in my mouth that burns throat, tonge and lips, also leaving a lump in my throat. I am seeing my PCP and a GI doctor about these symptoms but the persist.

Do you think it necessary to have further tests to be sure my esophogus is not in bad shape? I am aware there are new non-invasive surgeries to relieve the sphincter muscle that has lost its effectiveness, (allowing the acids to leak up at night).

I have had periods of no problems but have still been adavised to continue taking medication.

Now I am going through a very difficult period of it bothering me almost any night I have either eaten too much at my main meal (at noon), or eating too late at night, or eating something that irriatates the condition. What do you adivise at this time to help me get rid of this as much as possible?

Do home remedies ever work and why does one have to buy a book in order to find out what they are?

Hello GeeLee,

It is important to consult with the doctor on a regular basis when you are on long term medication for GERD.

Other treatments to consider include: elevating the head of the bed for sleeping. It is possible to purchase a wedge and insurance may pay for it too.

Small, frequent meals: Be careful about eating small meals more frequently. Watch the eating in the evening too. A big meal at a restaurant just before bed may trigger the reflux.

Reduce the intake of trigger foods: coffee, carbonated drinks, caffeine, citrus (oranges) and tomatoes.
