Thursday, October 15, 2009 GeeLee asks

Q: I need to know more about a hiatal hernia and acid reflux. I have both , which came first?

I have suffered with acid reflux for years - was originally diagnosed with a hiatal hernia as well. I am not sure which came first, or how it might be immproved with surgery or treating the H hernia instead of all the medication for acid Reflux. I am doing all the things suggested to keep the reflux under control, but now and then I have problems. I also read where post nasal drip/allergy caused  can be an irritant and don't know what to do about this in regard to A reflux. I often feel my doctor puts me off and is not really interested in any options for making things better, or doing the latest surgical, lapriscopic, or lazer treatment when/if they are available.

Can you advise me

Sioncerely,

Gretals

Dear GeeLee

My daughter has acid reflux (gerd)  and food pushes up into her esophagus.   I am

DESPERATE on the blog if you want to check my daughters story that I posted yesterday.  I was not satisfied with her first doctors attitude towards her problem.  I felt he was not listening to what she was telling him.  As I pay for services rendered I at least expect him to listen.   I have since made an appointment with another specialist.  After surfing the net yesterday I came to the conclusion she has a hiatal hernia.

If at all possible SEE if you can find a doctor that will LISTEN TO WHAT YOU ARE ASKING AND WHAT YOU ARE TELLING HIM.   You pay him for services rendered and if he is worth something he will understand that you do not have all the knowledge that he has.   You are not a doctor otherwise you would not be visiting him.   I am starting to think that the acid reflux and the hernia go hand in hand.  Apparently they can

fix the LES with a laparoscopy.   I am also new at this problem and also dont have

all the anwers as yet.

Keep well,

Desparate

I have a Hiatal Hernia and Acid Reflex. Acid Reflux is errosion of the (LES) Lower esophagus Sphincter muscle. When acid gets in the esophagus up pass the diaphragm a hole can be eaten away causing a hiatal hernia.
