Q: Can acid reflux cause a "smoker's cough" (a cough that sounds like I smoke a pack or two a day)?

I have a cough that comes and goes.  People who hear it say it sounds like I smoke tons of cigarettes a day, but I've never smoked a day in  my life.  Some say it sounds like asthma...but I don't have those usual symptons.  My chest area does tend to hurt a little when my coughing lasts for weeks.  I have been diagnosed with acid reflux/GERD.  If this cough is a result of GERD, what would be my next step?

Hello Pam,

It is possible to have a cough associated with reflux. The doctor may prescribe reflux medication or send you to a pulmonologist (lung specialist) or a gastroenterologist for follow up.

yes acid reflux can cause a dry cough this is from the acid irritating the wind pipe it is very common with acid reflux, although it is not a smokers cough. wheezing is also common and chest pain, however you should consult a doctor about these symptoms just in case it has something else causing it. If u already have then yes it is acid reflux if you are not already get on prescription drugs for it i would recommend zegerid 40/1100, also see a gi to find what is causing the acid reflux, a test endoscopy or ercp both are similar.
