I am breastfeeding my 4 months old daughter. Just recently, this week,I noticed she gets irritable 2-3 minutes into her feeding. She gets very fussy, arches her back from pain, gets rashes on her face and neck. I also noticed tiny dots of blood in her stool and our pediatrician asked us to do a blood sample. Tests confirmed that 1 out in her 3 stool samples had blood. They told me to cut the dairy products from my diet as they are suspecting protein intolorence. Our overall concern also is that we distinctly hear baby's stomach grumble. Are there any definative tests to know exactly what she is suffering from? Also how do I know she is just protein intolorent or she has Acid Reflux? What are the syptoms of acid reflux? How come she is just developing this condition already into her 4 months? Please help with your advise. Thanks!

Hello Maia,
A common condition in infancy, Milk Soy Protein Intolerance(MSPI) can cause symptoms that look like infant reflux: crying and fussing during and after feeding, poor sleep and spit up.
Your doctor has confirmed signs of MSPI so a change of diet should bring relief from symptoms. It is important to read all food labels and search for hidden sources of dairy products in bread, crackers, cereal and other places you might not expect to find it.
It is possible that your baby has MSPI and reflux so it might take a few weeks on a new diet to see if there are still symptoms that need to be discussed with the doctor.
I am studying the new GERD treatment guidelines for infants and I will let you know if there are other new recommendations on feeding a baby.
