Q: Hi, I have been given omeprazole for acid reflux. 1-2h after eating oatmeal I experienced a burning feeling in the middle of my stomach which lasted for 1h, eased off when I walked. Is this normal?

Just before the burning sensation I had a feeling of extreme hunger. No appetite, I have pain around my throat (different areas) but no swollen glands as such. Pain comes on at night mostly, when I lay down or move around, if I bend over and do something straneous. My doctor thinks it may be acid reflux? I experienced the same feeling a few months ago after finishing my first IUI treatment with 50 I.U. Puregon and hCG and some antibiotics (used internally). I got vaginal thrush back then and it created the same kind of feeling after a few weeks and I felt very bloated and painful stomach, a fullness that made me feel sick. I didn't have much appetite then and I felt the same extreme empty stomach/hunger then. This time I got pain in my throat as well which started with a burning sensation in the back my throat over a month and a half ago and it has progressed to this painful throat at night and burnign sensation an hour after my meals? Can it be an ulcer that triggers the painful episodes or is it the acid reflux? Is there any tests which one can take to rule out that it's not systemic candidia that's caused it? If it is, I am eating the wrong food (oats)? Any suggestions as to what I can eat would be much appreciated too. I know I can't eat sugars, fat and acidic and spicy foods. I live on bananas, oats and dinner at the moment so it's not very varied. I am wondering if anyone may know what may be going on? I am worried that it may have been triggered by the thrush as I have got pain in my throat as well and had it before. I haven't got any whiteness visible in the back of my throat but the pain is further down.

Many thanks,

M

You have a lot going on and a lot of reason to question all of it. It's possible that your anti-bioitc threw off your body's normal pro-biotics as they kill the good bacteria in your gut as well as the bad bacteria. You may want to ask your doctor about taking a pro-biotic.

Your symptoms are consistent with reflux but again the question is why are they coming about now. Is it just merely coincidence? Is it due to an imbalance or is it due to something else? For many people oatmeal is a great healthy choice that causes no problems whatsoever. For me, I read what you are eating and cringe. I have a hard time moving things through my system. Things with too much fiber can cause my GI system to slow down and then make my reflux flare. Plus, for some reason bananas reak havoc on my reflux as it does with my sister (no genetic relation) and my brother (genetically mine). Maybe it's the bananas?

A food log would definitely help see a pattern. Are you consistently eating bananas with your oatmeal when this happens? Maybe it's the bananas?

You may want to read about the symptoms of reflux as well as some of the preventive things that can be done to help them.
