I have a 14 month old with gerd and has had it most of his life. He just started taking Nexium. He was taking prilosec before. Does another parent have experience with this medication and their child? He started gagging and vommiting with 2nd stage baby food and cereal at 12 months. Now his food must be close to liquid to avoid gagging and vomitting. He didn't do that before. Has another parent experienced this with their baby? Pediatrician says it normal. I have an appointment with GI on Monday, just curious about other parent experiences.

Hello!

Nexium and Prilosec are both brand names for a medication called a Proton Pump Inhibitor. They are similar medications but sometimes one brand seems to work better than another. Since you are going to the GI on Monday, be sure to ask if this is the best treatment for the symptoms.

It is worrisome that your son is gagging and vomiting on babyfood. My refluxers were not at all interested in baby food and went straight to table foods at 12-15 months. I had to go very slowly with new foods. Sometimes swallowing is painful from reflux. Other times, there is gagging or choking from an oral motor problem. Ask the doctor if part of the treatment plan would be a consult with a feeding specialist such as a speech language pathologist.

Good luck,

Thank you for your response and suggestion.

My son does eat table food also, but not all. He does not like all textures. if the table food is small enough, he will eat it and will not gag or vomit. I am usually told by the pediatirician and GI that as long as he is gaining weight they are happy.

I am happy that he gains weight, sleeps well, and is a happy baby. I am concerned that his gagging and vomiting that has started around one year old will affect how he learns to eat in the near future. Did you just feed your children table food only, meaning just small peices of food? Did you see or feel the acid reflux affected your children's development?

Thank you again.
