Brain freeze in esophagus?

Vicki

Can a person with acid reflux and Barrett's Esophagus have pain from eating ice cream? Like  "brain freeze" in the esophagus? I have been noticing pain lately whenever I eat ice cream or anything extremely cold.

I am a Mom to 3 refluxers and now am dealing with reflux myself....

I have this problem as well and it got worse as my reflux got worse. My assumption is that with the irritation in my esophagus anything out of the ordinary is going to cause increased irritation. I have not had too much of an issue with ice cream (although I'm beginning to think it worsens my reflux - I'm just trying to pretend it doesn't) but ice cold drinks are treacherous. It does seem to help me if I drink from a straw rather than straight from the cup. Straw drinking in general leads to smaller amouts going down with each swallow.

With the ice cream it may be helpful to let it sit for a little bit to become softer and then make a conscious effort to really have it melt in your mouth before swallowing it.
