My daughter had a similar issue - I wrote a sharepost about it. At 9 years old my daugther got a chronic cough that we treated with allergy meds, then with an inhalded steroid. Neither one worked. Then on a whim I put her on reflux meds (she was on them as a baby). Cough went away. Took her off the allergy meds and asthma meds. Still no cough. Took her off the reflux meds - cough came back. Back on reflux meds - cough gone again. Now she needs a nightly maintenance dose of ranitidine (generic Zantac) to keep her from coughing. When she gets sick it can take longer for her to get rid of the cough and sometimes we need to temporarily increase it to one in the morning as well as the one before bed.

You may want to talk to your daughter's pediatrician about the possibility of reflux being the cause of the coughing. Does your daughter have a history of reflux as a baby? If not, that doesn't rule out reflux as the cause of the cough but if so it is a good thing for the doctor to consider.

Remember though that if you do go forward with reflux meds it can take a couple of weeks for them to make a significant difference with a cough because it can take a while for the irritation to heal. If after a couple of weeks of taking any prescribed medication as written - if she still isn't better then it's time to go back again.

Best of Luck - Stephanie
