If one is diagnosed with grade 3 GERD how does it develop into Barrets Esophagus & how does one tell

Dear Doctor,

I was diagnosed with grade 3 GERD in Feb 2007, and I have been on proton pump inhibitors, intermittently over the last few years. I initially took pantoprazole for over 6 months and then my GP told me to take it when I need it. However, recently I have the feeling of food stuck in my throat. But I was wondering how does someone like me who has Grade 3 GERD go on and develop Barrets Esophagus, or how likely is it? I am very scared of this condition, and I was wondering how that develops and how does one tell?

Regards
