Q: Why do people with GERD cough during the night while tryng to sleep?

My sleep is often interrupted my dry coughing which some doctors believed to be as a result of GERD. How does GERD cause coughing?

It is because of the acid flowing backwards is irritating the throat.  Elevate your head and take antacids before going to bed.  I am a sufferer, too and these preventive behavioral changes helped me.

I have had GERD for years and once I elevated my headboard 2 inches, I no longer experience any reflux at night. I also don't eat anything for at least 2 hours before going to bed....
