Q: I have a 6 week old who has been diagnosed with acid reflux

My six week old daughter has acid reflux.  My peditrician prescribed her  Zantac but she does not seem to be doing better.  She is a cat napper, is fussy, constantly has the hiccups, appears constipated, pulls away from her bottle at times, wheezes, coughs, and periodically shouts in pain when sleeping.  My baby does not spit up nor vomits. She is formula feed.  The big issue is she constantly chokes.  Initially it was so bad where we had to blow on her face in order to get her to breathe again.  Her choking episodes occur sporadically throughout the day.  Not necessarily after feedings.  She can be sleeping and she will appear she is grasping for air and choking.  I am very frustrated as she needs to be monitored closely.  I am worried as I eventually I have to return to work. I have also tried switching formulas.  My peditriacian ordered a G.I. test which came back normal.  Has anyone experienced this before with their infant child? Any suggestions or advice? Please help!

Hello NG,

I am so sorry your little one is struggling with reflux. It is such a worry when you are concerned about choking and breathing during mealtime. Has the doctor seen her eating, choking and holding her breath? Make sure he/she is aware of the extent of the problem.

Did she have an upper GI test? During the test, the baby drinks formula mixed with barium and a series of x rays are taken. Some babies have an upper GI test and a swallow study to make sure there is no aspiration. Do you know which one she had?

It will be really important to check in with the doctor frequently so he/she can monitor her and make adjustments to her treatment plan as you go along.

I wonder why she is constipated. Sometimes the constipation causes pain and discomfort too and may even lessen the reflux symptoms. Ask your doctor for assistance with this.

Meanwhile, come back and visit us and let us know how you are doing. There is a wonderful support community here at HealthCentral.

Best wishes,
