Q: My 16 yr old daughter was diagnosed with GERD. We have been working with pediatrician, What is best test to confirm GERD or not?

16 yr old vomits after meals. She can only eat soft foods like applesauce and oatmeal. Trials of GERD meds not helping. Worry this could be ED, but would like to confirm GERD or eliminate it quickly. What is best test for GERD, with these vomiting symptom?  Some signs of ED are present, but several big ones are not.

Worried parents.

I understand your concerns. Last year, my now 12 year old decided that she wasn't healthy and started eating very little amounts. She wasn't gaining weight despite her growth spurt. Luckily she got the stomach flu and passing out in the shower helped her get back to a healthy level of eating.

But, on the other hand, she also has reflux and has to be careful about what she eats as do I. Sometimes people think we are avoiding foods in order to watch our weight but instead most of the time it's because most of the fattiest foods are those that make us feel the worst.

The best "test" for reflux is generally a medication trial. If that isn't working then other things need to be looked at. Eosinophilic Esophagitis should be considered as well as hiatal hernia, etc. You may want to look into a GI specialist. It can take a little while to get in to see one especially if you have to see a pediatric one (there's a 3 month wait for pediatric GI in my area, 2 week wait for an adult GI).

A thorough evaluation and discussion of her symptoms with a GI specialist will then give them a good idea of where to go next with testing and treatment.
