Q: does acid reflux cause severe brathing problems?

I have bad breathing problems and I also have bad acid reflux!  I am often in the ER because of it.  Especially after I eat!  Are these 2 problems associated?

Generally the two are not considered related. But, research has shown that severe reflux can trigger asthma reactions. In some people when the acid comes up the windpipe goes into protective spasm in order to try to protect the lungs from the acid. The problem is that in some people the spasm is severe and creates breathing problems.

My daughter's primary symptom at 9 years old (had been a refluxer as a baby) was a chronic cough that was not helped by asthma medications. PPIs on the other hand got rid of the cough!

This is a good question to ask the doctors as it is possible that the breathing problem is a sign that your reflux is not adequately controlled.

Definately, especially if you have asthma or COPD.  Many of the asthma meds make it much worse.

I have been put on 2 different type of reflux meds and finally have the problem pretty much under control.

Don't exercise or do a lot of bending right after you eat and don't eat before you go to bed.  Sleep with your head on more than one pillow or raise head of bed.  These all help.

I do believe they are related because I know someone that would do that and went to see a specialist for asthma and come to find out that the person has acid reflux and was put on acid reflux meds., and that stopped. Of course, this person does have asthma, but the cause of the asthma is because of the acid reflux. So, most definitely, I do think they are related.

they are not necessarily related.First, what did you eat? second, consider the amount you ate.. try to research on your proper diet..do you eat spicy food, oily, or food that is difficult to digest? when you eat see to it that you are not that full..I researched that the stomach and the brain is 10 minutes away..so when your brain tells you that you are full, your stomach is "more than full"..eat small amount of food...if your reflux is really that bad, try porridge so that your stomach wont have difficult time to digest it...God bless! try food supplements that are high in fiber..here in the Philippines, I was able to find one, it's called Fiberhealth..It did not totally remove my reflux but it reduced it significantly.

try to research on gas forming foods so you can avoid them...by the way cold water can create gas in you stomach so if you still drink cold water, sorry but you need to stop.

God bless!
