Hi ladarrius crawford,

Has the baby been diagnosed by a doctor to have Acid Reflux? Online sites are great resources for information, but can not take the place of your doctor's advice and care. Once your baby has been diagnosed, there are some links here that will help you ask questions and manage your baby's care.

Here are a list of symptoms of a child with GERD.

If a baby stops breathing, whether older sibling, or not, someone should call 911. I am not sure I would advise an older sibling to do anything other than that, unless the older sibling is trained in infant CPR. Sometimes infants have episodes of sleep apnea, where they just forget to breathe. In those cases, a mild shaking of the leg or arm will usually wake the child and cause he or she to breathe in.

Here is a link to information about sleep apnea.

Good luck. I hope this helps somewhat. Please stay in touch and let us know how you and the baby are doing!

Hello! You may have heard about adults with GERD having damage to the esophagus from untreated GERD. Fortunately, babies and children with GERD rarely have the same type of damage to the esophagus as adults. Babies with GERD may experience a great deal of pain and have other health problems such as poor weight gain and respiratory or breathing problems. The good news is that reflux is common and there are many well established treatments to help reduce symptoms.

If your baby has had breathing problems from GERD, you will be on high alert for another episode. A doctor can evaluate the seriousness of the problem and recommend careful observation as well as aggressive treatment for GERD. In some cases, a special monitor is needed at home that will alert you if your baby is having a breathing problem. It is best to have an adult supervise a very young baby, especially if there is a history of breathing problems. I know of many grandmas who are afraid to babysit their grand baby after a breathing problem.

Breathing problems are more common in very young babies. In time, your older children will be able to babysit for you.
