Tuesday, September 30, 2008 Sandy asks

Q: baby drinking milk when she sleeps both day and night time?

We have to rock my 8 month old to sleep before giving her formula. My husband and I don't feel she is in deep sleep because her eyes are slightly open and when she is full she refuses to take the bottle by herself and puts her thumb and sleeps. She is taking solids and water while awake, however she will gag when formula is offered to her while awake. We are not sure if this is normal for babies and is this going to cause future development or other problems? Please advice.

Hello Sandy,

You have found the right place! Pretty soon we will have to call HealthCentral "sleepfeeding central". It seems that all of the parents feeding their little ones in a light sleep have found each other here. You will want to search this site for the discussion started by AmyD. I have also written several blogs on the topic of sleep feeding or dream feeding.

The bottom line is you are not alone and others share your questions and concerns. It is important to discuss sleep feeding with the doctor and see if reflux treatment will allow your baby to drink while awake.

Let me know if you need assistance finding answers to your questions.

Hi sandy, You are not alone. My four and half month old baby boy started doing the same thing a couple of weeks ago. He was diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks of age. I really thought things would get better as time passed but they only seem to be getting worse. My little boy used to want milk (expressed breast milk only) all day long. I guess it acted as an antacid for his reflux, but now he is refusing the bottle (unless he is asleep). He drinks most of the milk during his night feedings. I think I have cried every day since he was born. This has been really difficult to experience. I wish I knew when this whole reflux nightmare will be over. Good luck to you and your little one! If your son is 8 months old he should outgrow his reflux soon. Reply
