Q: I get acid reflux quite often. The pain is in my throat and even in my ears. The next day I am coughing and bringing up plem is this a normal thing

I have had this since 1988.  I have been on several medications over the years and am currently on ompresole?  There are nights when I wake up with the acid taste in my mouth and have to get up.   the pain is in my throat and ears, its awful.  I cough and in the morning I cough up phlem.  Is this a normal chain of events or do I need to take action. Also I weeze for a day or two.

It is a fairly common picture of what happens with reflux but it definitely isn't "normal." I am concerned that you are having pretty severe episodes that are taking days to recover from. If you have outward signs of the damage the acid is causing you may also have damage in your esophagus or you could wind up with asthma symptoms from the reflux.

I hate to say it but it's time to go back to your doctor. Let him know when you take your medicine and how much you take. Try to keep track of your symptoms between now and then. It will help your doc get the full picture.

You may also want to track what you are eating for the next few days. Do you see any patterns between the food and your symptoms?

If you haven't already, you may want to try some of the preventive options to see if they help.
