Thursday, July 16, 2009 2000surgery asks

Q: I have developed a Chronic Cough, do I go to my Gastro Dr. or Surgeon who operated in 2000.

I had a successful Laproscopic Nissan Fundiplication in 2000.  I have had no problems, other than what everyone has after surgery.  I now have developed a chronic cough, at first I assumed it was allergies, after over a year, it is getting worse.  I have gained 30 pounds within the last year and wonder if that could be the problem.  My question is do I go to the doctor who performed the surgery or my gastro doctor?

If you have already seen someone to rule out allergies then I would head to GI first. My daughter's only symptom of reflux is a chronic cough. She was bad as a baby but at 9 she developed a chronic cough that was not helped by asthma or allergy meds. I put her back on PPIs and the cough went away. Her pediatrician said she wasn't thinking GI because my daughter wasn't having other symptoms (that we know of - she's lived with reflux all her life - she doesn't know what it's like to not have it). We're now awaiting a GI appointment to discuss long term options.

The 30 pounds could be a contributing factor but honestly I didn't have reflux issues until the past year after I had finally gotten down to my "ideal" body weight so who knows.....

Thanks...good luck with your daughter.  I haven't seen anyone yet...just wanted to start at the right place.
