Wednesday, September 02, 2009 Erica asks

Q: My 5 year old daughter has had croup several times.

We have taken her to the ER the first 2 times until we figured out what it was. She has a nebulizer and predisone, but the croup seems to be happening very frequently (every 3-4 months) for the past year. I'm wondering what the underlying cause is and how to go about asking the daughter to test for GERD?

Hello Erica,

Having croup over and over must be so frustrating and scary for your family. It certainly makes sense to look for an underlying cause such as reflux. It might be best to start by having a discussion with your daughter's primary care doctor (pediatrician). If there are other symptoms that make you and the doctor think reflux might be driving some of the croup, a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist may be needed. A pediatric pulmonologist or a pediatric ears, nose and throat doctor (ENT or otolaryngologist) may also be consulted.

I hope you get some answers soon.

My son had croup several times starting at the age 31/2. I googled reacuring croup and acid reflux came up. Sure enough, I noticed symptoms of him gulping, and complaining of a sore belly. I took him to our family doctor and explained it to him, but he was not so sure. I showed him all the information I had on it. We looked into it further and sure enough the acid was causing his croup cough. Hope this helps.
