Hi Shelley,

While hives is not a typical reaction to the drug Zantac, apparently it can happen and is considered a serious side effect. You can read about all of the side effects of Zantac here. If you think the Zantac is the problem, you should ask your doctor to prescribe an alternative.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you and your grandson are doing!

Dear Grandma Shelley,

I have found that the pharmacist often knows a great deal about side effects from medication. Make sure your grandson is receiving the correct dose for his age and weight. See if the medication has any hidden ingredients that may cause him to react.

You could ask the doctor for another brand of medication and see if the rash goes away.

Babies get hives and rashes for a variety of reasons: food they eat, baby formula and even from laundry detergent.

Good luck with tracking down the cause of the rash.

Best wishes,
