Hi Shelley, While hives is not a typical reaction to the drug Zantac, apparently it can happen and is considered a serious side effect. You can read about all of the side effects of Zantac here. If you think the Zantac is the problem, you should ask your doctor to prescribe an alternative. Please stay in touch and let us know how you and your grandson are doing!Vicki M
